Background

Denied their right to self-determination and suffering an ongoing hidden genocide, West Papuans have launched the first ever major campaign to boycott Indonesia. By refusing to use stolen West Papuan resources, you can help West Papuans reclaim their sovereignty.
Every day, people across the world use products that include West Papuan resources. West Papuans are asking you to STOP until they have finally been allowed to decide their own future.

Illegal occupation

West Papua has been illegally occupied since 1963. Promised self-determination by the UN, West Papuans were cheated out of this right by the so-called ‘Act of Free Choice’, as Indonesia hand-picked 1,026 Papuans and forced them at gunpoint to vote against independence.

Genocide

Over 500,000 West Papuans have been killed under Indonesian occupation, in a genocide that has been hidden from the world by a six-decade media blackout. At the same time, West Papuan culture and identity is being slowly wiped out by Indonesian repression and settlement.

Ecocide

Home to the world’s third-largest rainforest, West Papua’s abundant natural resources are being plundered by the Indonesian state and international corporations.
Industrial development, working in tandem with Indonesian military operations, drives massive internal displacement in West Papua. Over 100,000 Papuans – the majority women and children – have been forced from their homes since 2018. According to human rights defenders on the ground, over 85,000 West Papuans remain displaced to this day.

Explainer

The call to boycott Indonesia was initially made in December 2022 by the Pacific Conference of Churches (PCC), who urged a targeted Pacific boycott of Indonesian products.
Building on this demand, West Papuans are now asking people around the world to boycott Indonesian products, particularly those made using West Papuan resources. Through enormous mines and industrial plantations, Indonesia profits from West Papua’s natural wealth while denying its people their basic rights. Boycott Indonesia until West Papuans are finally allowed to hold the independence referendum they have been denied since the 1960s.
Over 70 West Papuan tribes, political groups, and customary and civil society organisations have endorsed the boycott campaign.
